The Campus Master Plan guides the physical and capital development of UIW's San Antonio campuses, which include the Broadway Campus, Feik School of Pharmacy, Rosenberg School of Optometry, School of Osteopathic Medicine and School of Rehabilitation Sciences.
Executive Summary
The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) One Word Campus Plan 2020 identifies the property, infrastructure and facilities initiatives important to advancing the university’s strategic goals over the coming 10 to 20 years.
The planning began in the fall of 2017 at the initiative of Dr. Thomas M. Evans as he began his tenure as UIW’s 10th president. He envisioned a plan that would be visionary, strategic, and realistic, and a process that was comprehensive, and participatory resulting in a set of recommendations rooted in UIW’s Mission, history and community. He saw the opportunity to enlist UIW’s most ardent and informed supporters — its students, faculty, staff, and trustees — to create a plan that would guide projects that would ensure UIW’s advancement in American Catholic higher education.
Campus Master Plan Focus Areas
Founders Hall
Founders Hall is a 10-acre property that includes an eight-story building with approximately 350,000 square feet of office space, a 500-car parking garage, and a surrounding lot of hundreds of additional spaces. Named for UIW’s founders, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the property has transformed the Broadway Campus, expanding its size by 20 percent.
Opened in the fall of 2026, Founders Hall is now home to some of UIW’s innovative and globally focused initiatives. Academic programs from the School of Media and Design and the School of Mathematics, Science and Engineering are housed within Founders Hall. Additionally, it is the site of the Liza and Jack Lewis Center of the Americas, the Office of International Affairs, Health Services and the UIW Police Department. Three murals, an interfaith prayer room with a foot washing station and a planned installation reflect UIW’s commitment to Mission.
A careful and strategic approach to design resulted in a state-of-the-art facility that honors the building’s mid-century beginnings, UIW’s spiritual heritage, the student experience and emerging possibilities of transformative education.
Improving academic facilities includes addressing both digital and physical infrastructure needs. Since 2017, multi-million-dollar investments in technology has modernized capabilities in academic buildings on Broadway Campus and Health Professions campuses. Improvements include deployments of WiFi 6 across more than 15 buildings, full migration to the Canvas learning management system, HyFlex classrooms opened that enable simultaneous in-person and remote instruction, among others.
Residential Facilities
Providing an exceptional living and learning environment through improved residential facilities has always been among UIW’s capital priorities. Residential options expanded in 2020 to include the renovated Township Apartments. The newly acquired complex supported the increase in demand for student housing and provided an elevated residential experience for upper-level students. The historic Dubuis Hall experienced a full physical and technology renovation, reopening in 2022.
Health Professions Campuses
UIW’s four campuses dedicated to health professions education have gained new learning spaces, labs and facilities over the course of the Campus Master Plan implementation. In the Feik School of Pharmacy added the Stonegate Pharmacy Sterile Compounding Laboratory. The School of Rehabilitation Sciences introduced new lab spaces for the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. The Rosenberg School of Optometry modernized its technology and instructional capabilities. A new solar panel system sits atop the School of Osteopathic Medicine and generates more than 81,000 kWh of renewable energy annually.
Athletics
Continued improvement of UIW Athletic facilities help to meet the demands of an NCAA Division 1 program and better serve the university as a whole.
Since the start of the Campus Master Plan, improvements have been made to Daniel Sullivan Baseball Field, H-E-B Field, Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium, the Convocation Center court and Mabry Tennis Courts. In 2026, a new scoreboard was installed at Benson Stadium.
